Many paths to parenthood involve a psychological evaluation or consultation as a standard, expected step. For egg, sperm, and embryo donation, for gestational surrogacy, and for some IVF and third-party reproduction processes, a psychological evaluation helps confirm readiness and emotional preparedness and supports informed, well-considered decisions for everyone involved.
Encore Psychology conducts reproductive and fertility psychological evaluations as a neutral, credentialed professional service. Evaluations are conducted under the doctoral-level oversight and supervision of Dr. Brooke Colman, a licensed Clinical Psychologist and part of Michigan Healthcare Professionals (MHP), a physician group serving the metro Detroit area.

Reproductive and fertility psychological evaluations at Encore Psychology include:
- Egg, sperm, and embryo donor screening evaluations: psychological screening of prospective donors as part of the donation process
- Intended parent and recipient educational consultations: support and assessment for individuals and couples pursuing donation, IVF, or third-party reproduction
- Gestational carrier (surrogate) evaluations: psychological evaluation of prospective gestational carriers
- IVF and fertility-treatment readiness consultations: assessment and support around the emotional demands of treatment (offered less frequently than donor and carrier evaluations)
These evaluations are most often arranged through a fertility clinic, reproductive endocrinologist, donor or surrogacy agency, or attorney, though individuals and couples may also reach out directly.
Purpose and scope
A reproductive or fertility psychological evaluation is not designed to find disqualifying information. It is a professional assessment of emotional readiness, expectations, support systems, and psychological functioning relevant to the specific reproductive process, producing a clear written record that clinics, agencies, and attorneys can rely on.
Where the evaluation involves a donor or gestational carrier, it follows ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine) guidelines for third-party reproduction psychological evaluation, and is conducted under professional neutrality standards.
What the evaluation involves
A reproductive or fertility psychological evaluation at Encore Psychology typically includes:
- A thorough clinical intake covering personal and family history, mental health history, relationship and support context, and the individual's understanding of and motivations for the specific process
- Psychoeducation relevant to the referral question and the reproductive process involved
- Standardized psychological assessment instruments selected for the specific referral question, including measures of personality and of readiness for the reproductive process involved
- For couples, each partner is evaluated individually as well as together where applicable
- Review of any relevant documentation provided in advance
Evaluations are conducted in person at 33 Bloomfield Hills Parkway, Suite 225, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304, Monday through Friday. Telehealth may be available through PSYPACT for some evaluation types; see Online Evaluations or contact us to confirm whether your evaluation can be completed remotely.
The written report
The evaluation concludes with a written psychological report addressing the specific questions required by the referring clinic, agency, or attorney. Reports are written to meet the professional documentation standards of the relevant party.
Report turnaround is typically 5 to 10 business days for private-pay clients. If your clinic, agency, or legal process has a specific deadline, please mention it when you reach out.
The report is provided according to the consent and authorization process established at intake.
Insurance and fees
Reproductive, fertility, and donor evaluations are usually private pay. For gestational carrier (surrogacy) evaluations, the intended family typically pays. Evaluations may also be billed to the coordinating clinic or agency rather than to personal health insurance; coverage varies considerably by plan and by how the evaluation is categorized.
Encore Psychology accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Blue Care Network (BCN), and Priority Health where applicable. We do not accept Medicaid plans, including Blue Cross Complete. Private pay is available, and superbills are provided on request. Contact us to discuss your specific situation and verify benefits before scheduling.
Superbills are available on request for clients seeking out-of-network reimbursement.
