Parenting and custody evaluation
A parenting and custody evaluation is a structured psychological assessment conducted in the context of custody or parenting-time proceedings. It is designed to provide the court with objective, clinically grounded findings relevant to parenting capacity and the best interests of the child. These evaluations are among the most significant and carefully conducted assessments a psychologist performs.

What a parenting and custody evaluation involves
A parenting and custody evaluation typically includes:
- Individual clinical interviews with each parent or caregiver
- Direct observation and interview with the child or children
- Standardized psychological assessment instruments
- Review of relevant records (legal, medical, educational)
- Collateral interviews with third parties as appropriate and authorized
- A comprehensive written report addressing parenting capacity, child adjustment, and the factors relevant to a best-interests determination
These evaluations are conducted under professional neutrality standards. The evaluating psychologist is not an advocate for either parent. Findings are reported accurately and without partiality.
Evaluations at Encore Psychology are conducted under the doctoral-level oversight and supervision of Dr. Colman.
Who typically refers
Parenting and custody evaluations are most commonly arranged through:
- Attorneys representing either party in the custody proceeding
- The court, through a formal order
- Guardians ad litem or other court-appointed professionals
- Occasionally by mutual agreement of both parties

Location, Scheduling, and Fees
Evaluations are conducted in person at 33 Bloomfield Hills Parkway, Suite 225, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304, Monday through Friday. The time from initial contact to first appointment is typically around six weeks; if a court deadline applies, please note it when you reach out.
